Today I will show you how the Revolve feature works. This feature is used to revolve a 2D sketch along an Axis or Centerline.
Open a new part with model units set to millimeters
Go to: File > New > Part
Create a 2D sketch
Select the Front Plane in the feature tree (menu at the left side) and create a sketch by clicking on the 2D Sketch icon. ![]()
The display changes so the Front plane faces you.
Create a Circle
Go to Tools > Sketch Entities > Circle or click at the circle icon ![]()
Create a sketch next to the Origin as shown in the picture. ![]()
Change the dimension and position of the circle by clicking at the dimension button ![]()

Now it’s time to create the Axis of revolution
Draw a vertical Centerline as shown in the picture ![]()
Create a Boss/Base Revolve
Go to: Insert > Boss/Base > Revolve or click at the Revolve icon ![]()
The Revolve menu appears
Because we didn’t close the 2D sketch we’ll automatically see the donut as shown in the picture.
If not, make sure that the Centerline of Sketch1 is set as Axis of Revolution ![]()
Midplane Revolve
It’s also possible to create a midplane revolve.
Change the One-Direction into Midplane ![]()
Change the Angle into 180 degrees ![]()
Notice what happens
Two-Directions Revolve
You can also draw a revolve with two directions:
Change the Midplane direction into Two-Direction ![]()
Change Angle1 into 280 degrees ![]()
Notice what happens
Click at the Thin-Feature option in the Revolve menu (NOTE: When this option is not visible, close the Revolve tab and re-open it again.
Change the wall thickness into 5 mm ![]()
Now you know what it takes to draw a revolve in SolidWorks.

I am interested in SolidWorks, although my educational version no longer works. I have now changed my education and it’s geared more towards IT than Engineering, so I cannot receive another educational version.
Is there a way I can gain a SolidWorks program to use – to learn, until I can afford the full program?
Thanks,
Matt Lazok
